For those of you following the uber-cool Elmore Leonard show Justified, the writers figured out a way to bring in a familiar, quick-witted Miami U.S. Marshal into the mix, and her name is Karen.
She appears in episode 2 this season, Cut Ties.
Karen remarried somewhere along the way, thus acquiring the new last name, although (for legal reasons) the episode doesn't get into it.
Carla and Olyphant, of course, co-starred in a little movie called Elektra Luxx, so they have tested their on-screen chemistry before.

Elektra's Top Five Movies Of The Year

I'm sick of everybody else's list having the same five movies. So here's mine, in no particular order:

1. Super 8. Best Spielberg picture in forever, best child actors in a movie since, like, To Kill A Mockingbird. Minus points for wasting Kyle Chandler (who really could've done a lot more) and for the monster itself, which was kinda goofy. Then again, any time the kids were on screen and especially Elle Fanning, the movie soars.

2. Ghost Protocol. Not to come off like a JJ Abrams appreciation society here, but this most Pixar-ish entry of the Mission Impossible franchise has a pretty much flawless first hour and a half, climaxing with a Hitchcock-worthy sequence in Dubai (both the building climb and the sandstorm). The last act is tricked up Roger Moore era-Bond and the movie gets minus points for the truly flat Paula Patton (acting, not chest -- even though there are plenty of great chests in Hollywood to choose from, if that was the main requirement). Especially depressing after the women in MI:3 were so good.

Still, the best action movie of the year and the first time I ever remember thinking Tom Cruise absolutely rules.

3. The Skin I Live In. The strangest movie of the year is also the most meticulously made. Nobody touches Maestro Almodovar in terms of synchronizing production design, music, costumes and camera work these days -- no one. A deeply personal meditation and outrageously inventive twist on the mad scientist genre, this is the one movie I saw that provoked the strangest feelings throughout and stayed with me for weeks. Time capsule-wise, this one will be discussed a lot in years to come. It pulls off unnerving tricks in the most invisible of ways.

4. Hugo. All due respect to Mr. DiCaprio, a fine actor whom I certainly don't blame for aligning himself with the best American director and becoming his muse -- but the batch of movies Scorsese concocted in those years (The silly Gangs Of New York, the dazzling-if-mostly-untrue Aviator, the overrated, messy The Departed, the sub-Fincher broken toy Shutter Island) have nothing on this return to form. 3D or not -- and God knows I dislike 3D -- but here it's objectively employed some 50 times better than any other 3D attempted -- Scorsese's love letter to movies reminds us of why he's this country's premier filmmaker: audacious camerawork, excellent performances and Thelma Schoonmaker. A very fine Ben Kingsley is Georges Melies and the whole thing -- aside from the inherent weirdness of a PG-rated Scorsese pic -- works like clockwork.

Of the less-than-stellar Oscar shortlist, this is the best picture.

5. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. You would be forgiven for falling asleep if you see this on the wrong night, it is true that the pace is glacial. It's also true that it captures the world of Le Carre and the absurdity of little boys growing up to form little boy clubs so they can play incestuous little boy games. Gary Oldman is terrific, as is the cinematography, production design and music (Almodovar's main man again, Alberto Iglesias -- head and tails above any other film composer working right now), and if (SPOILER ALERT AHEAD, KINDA SORTA) casting makes it a little easy to figure out who you're looking for, the players are such a joy to watch that you forgive this.

Disclaimer: I have not seen A Separation, which I hear is really good.

The two most overrated movies of the year:

1. The Descendants. The epitome of detached, not-quite-feel-bad-but-not-quite-feel-good-either-comedy, Alexander Payne is currently the king of the sort of American "indie" movie that leaves me absolutely indifferent. No crime that, except I'm confused by the amount of universal praise it has generated. Like a poorman's Mike Nichols, this is what passes for intellectual cinema these days and it's strange. Completely obvious from the get-go and featuring the most annoying wall-to-wall Hawaiian score ever attempted, George Clooney (mugging often) can't save this uninsightful TV movie of the week. Great turn, however, by the actress playing his teenage daughter.

2. Young Adult. Perhaps Jason Reitman secretly wants to be Alexander Payne (who, to be fair, once made the great, Wilder-esque Election) and here he tries hard, though to be honest, I was so bored, I couldn't get past the first half hour. Despite the best attempts of the photography, Charlize Theron remains beautiful in this stunted, tone-deaf "character" study that is supposed to be "hip" and like, "real". I hear it was also supposed to be funny, but I'm not sure.

Results Of The Poll: Emotional Rescue

Despite a last minute vote for the much maligned Undercover (which, to be fair, has a few good songs), Emotional Rescue persevered as the best of the "less-than-stellar" Stones record.
Unsurprisingly, nobody nominated the truly awful Bridges To Babylon (exactly one good song: Saint Of Me) or the uber-slick and mostly soulless Voodoo Lounge (which does include the decent, if generic I Go Wild and the Keith standout tracks The Worst and Thru And Thru).

It was my vote as well, and it's honestly almost a "good" Stones record, if not for the over-abundance of perfect B-sides on the poorly sequenced Side One (Send It To Me being the prime example).
A killer title track where Mick gets all manly in his Curtis Mayfield/Prince falsetto over an irresistible Wyman-Watts groove, and featuring the ace blues lament Down In The Hole and Keith's Some Girls leftover All About You, it very nearly reaches Some Girls quality level (perhaps they should've included that other SG castoff, Hang Fire, which they revived for Tattoo You).

These Ukranian students are the raddest women's rights protesters out there. Claiming "Feminism is impotent", (bad pun intended), these 20-something students stage topless and/or provocative protests against prostitution, inequality, religious oppression, etc.
Check out the atrociously misogynistic treatment from CNN (from a female "editorial producer", no less) as well as a slightly less banal report on them.
Following a protest in Belarus, three of them were recently abducted/beaten/doused in gasoline by former KGB agents and left naked in a forest.
"Sex sells products", they rightly say, "why not use it to sell political views"?
As always, the notion that a woman might have a great pair of tits as well as a brain is somehow a threat.
To quote Kim Gordon's question to Chuck D in Kool Thing: "Fear of a female planet?"

Elektra's Favorite Artist -- David Bowie

For me, when push comes to shove, it always goes back to Bowie.
The most stylish pop star, with the best voice, with songs as great as those by Dylan, Lennon-McCartney and Jagger-Richards.
He recorded maybe my favorite song ever (Heroes) and even his crap records have a classic or two on them (Young Americans, The Man Who Sold The World).

He anticipated every major movement in cool rock music of the last 40 years, stealing from the best about five years before everybody else caught on (The Velvets, Iggy, Syd Barrett, Neu!).
He made the best record ever about becoming a rock & roll star when he wasn't one and it made him a huge rock & roll star (The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars).

His best records (Hunky Dory, Ziggy, Station To Station, Scary Monsters) still sound impossibly modern and not dated.
He is so fashionable, he wrote the best song ever about the subject (Fashion), indicting it for being Fascist while working up an impossible-to-resist groove. (He didn't fare so well with his half-assed meditation on fame -- the aptly titled Fame -- but maybe a stoned Lennon was to blame as cowriter).
He produced Iggy's best solo stuff, toured with his band, wrote a better Lou Reed song than Lou Reed (Queen Bitch).

He didn't mess with Rap, Nu-Metal or Grunge, perfectly understanding his limitations.
(No, Tin Machine does not count as Grunge, it was just slightly artless blues-rock).
His least convincing persona, the slick 80's pop star, still managed to record the great Blue Jean and one-up Elton John (Modern Love), although maybe that's not such a wonderful achievement.

He gets great work out of ace guitar players (Mick Ronson -- although he really didn't give him enough credit, Adrian Belew, Peter Frampton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Earl Slick).
He gave Mott The Hoople All The Young Dudes cause he was such a big fan.
His last record to date, the underrated Reality, contains four of his best songs ever (New Killer Star, Never Get Old, Fall Dog Bombs The Moon, She'll Drive The Big Car). Don't believe me? Go listen to them.

He recorded Sound & Vision, which still sounds like the soundtrack for the future.
Every time it gets to the part in Ashes To Ashes where he confesses he's never done good things, bad things or anything out of the blue, it breaks my heart.

He can act (Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, The Man Who Fell To Earth, The Hunger, Into The Night, Fire Walk With Me, the stage version of The Elephant Man) and hangs out with impossibly cool people (Julian Schnabel aside).
He recorded Little Drummer Boy with Bing Crosby.
He narrated Peter & The Wolf.
Totally stole Live Aid with TVC-15 and Rebel Rebel.
He copped moves from William Burroughs and perfected cut and paste lyrics which influenced pretty much everybody.
He has great hair and those weird eyes.

He made up the song Five Years from scratch. (I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlour, drinking milk shakes cold and long, smiling and waving and looking so fine, don't think you knew you were in this song...)
I love him.

Elektra's Favorite Kate Winslet Performance -- Romance & Cigarettes

An odd movie any way you slice it, but touched by greatness.
Director John Turturro unleashes his cast in this bawdy, uneven musical, and some people fare better than others.
Winslet, (understandably) rated so highly in everything she does to the point where she often gets a free pass for less than stellar work, is absolutely top notch here, playing a foul-mouthed Agent Provocateur salesgirl.
Her breakup scene later in the film might be the best scene in it.
So I nominate this (along with the great Heavenly Creatures) as my favorite performance by the otherwise ubiquitous Kate.
